Summer Fun in Frederick

It’s time to enjoy summer in Frederick. Events are happening again, and it’s the perfect time to take advantage of East of Market’s central location with proximity to things to do, sports, and the arts. Here is a sampling of some of the happenings around town in the next few months. 

The YMCA offers summer camps throughout the season for children of all ages. Financial assistance is available and there are day camps and overnight camps to choose from. East of Market features a pool and fitness center, however, the Frederick Y also offers pickleball, racquetball, and other organized activities. 

Live music is easy to find at several outdoor venues around town. The Baker Park Bandshell hosts a free Summer Concert Series every week through August 29th. They also host a Summerfest Family Theatre every Thursday at 10AM featuring clowns, magicians, musicians, and puppeteers, through August 19th. For a $5 entry fee, guests over 21 can enjoy Alive @ Five at the Carroll Creek Amphitheater every Thursday for an outdoor happy hour. 

School may be out for the summer but there are plenty of opportunities to learn. The history of the area is prevalent in the local antique shops and visiting the covered bridges provides a truly unique experience. 

Sports fans can enjoy watching the Frederick Keys baseball team as they play at Harry Grove Stadium through August. The Great Bicycle Tour of the C&O Canal rolls through town July 10 – 13th and there are several golf courses around town. Frederick’s mountainous location means there are plenty of amazing hiking trails and the state and national parks nearby offer relaxation only a few minutes away.

Frederick is a very “Livable” town

The website Livability recently surveyed millennials about the most livable cities in the country. Frederick, MD, was named the 47th most “livable” place in the country. Frederick has established itself as one of our Nation’s treasures with what it offers both culturally and historically. Frederick has developed a reputation as a city that people want to live in rather than move out of, and East of Market’s central location is ideal for enjoying the perks of living here. The survey included several criteria that made each city a candidate for “top 50 places to live” recognition. Among them were amenities, demographics, education, economy, health care, housing, social and civic capital, and transportation.

Frederick is thriving. Millennials want to live where there is opportunity, and Frederick’s economy provides them with a stable place to live and work. Currently, the city has an unemployment rate of 5.4%; the US is averaging 6%. Several tech firms call Frederick home, such as professional, scientific, and technical services, which make up 11.5% of the workforce in Frederick, second to healthcare and social assistance, which makes up 12.4%. Frederick, where the average income per resident is 13% better than the national average, is a terrific place for millennials to grow their career.  

During the better part of the last year-and-a-half, health and health care have been paramount, especially with dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. The residents of Frederick are fortunate to have a plethora of medical facilities to choose from to maintain their own health and loved ones. Frederick Health Hospital, one of the general hospitals that provide a wide array of medical services, the John M. Stockman Cancer Institute and Children’s National Frederick are among the region’s top medical care facilities. Millennials make up a considerable segment of the population that prioritizes health more than any other generation before them, and the many choices to maintain it are plentiful.

It also doesn’t need to be reminded that Frederick is a hub for culture, history, and culinary delights. Frederick County was a major Civil War theater for history fans, and Frederick is home to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. There is so much to love about Frederick, Maryland!  One great thing about Frederick is that there is so much to do.  No matter your interest, there is something in Frederick for you: whether it be theaters, sporting events, or museums.

Frederick is a great destination for beer enthusiasts with the numerous breweries available.  Below is a list of several of the many breweries located in Frederick, all only a short drive or bike ride from this apartment community!

Monocacy Brewing Company: This brewery, located in Downtown Frederick, offers tours every Saturday.  In addition to the tours, Monocacy Brewing Company offers a tasting room and growler fills.  The brewer also offers a variety of events: this Saturday, March 24, Fireside Pizza will be at Monocacy, and the Frederick County Public Library will offer board games the whole family can enjoy later in the month.  Learn more about Monocacy Brewing Company online.
