The 25 Coolest Towns in America to Visit in 2021!

Welcome to 2021!

Last year has been such a rollercoaster with the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Matador team- 2020 was the year we fell in love with domestic travel again, and we’re carrying that passion for safely exploring our own backyard into the new year.

They have listed our very own Frederick, Maryland as one of the top 25 coolest towns in America to visit in 2021!

Here are some fun facts about visiting Frederick!

Ranking in number 8:

Forget about DC — Maryland is the culinary epicenter of the Mid-Atlantic, and nowhere is that truer on a small-city level than Frederick. Frederick attracts visitors with its colorful downtown, Civil War history, access to the Catoctin Mountains, and art scene, but it’s the food and drink culture that makes this town worthy of more than just a quick day trip.

The 50-block historic district is where you’ll want to start. It’s home to colorful buildings, local boutiques, museums, and some of the region’s best restaurants and breweries. If you’re ready to dive right in and indulge, check out the new Thatcher & Rye from Top Chef All-Star Bryan Voltaggio (which recently replaced his flagship restaurant, VOLT). For a slightly more relaxed environment, the Family Meal diner is located in a former car dealership on the outskirts of downtown, giving you a contemporary take on the classic diner concept.

Frederick is equally enthusiastic about drinking. The Flying Dog Brewery has its award-winning beers like Dead Rise on tap while the Milkhouse Brewery at Stillpoint Farm specializes in small-batch farm-to-glass ales. Frederick also has a gorgeous wine trail that winds through the county’s hills, with stops at Hidden Hills Farm and VineyardSpringfield Manor Winery & DistilleryLinganore WinecellarsLoew Vineyards, and more. Be warned — the trail might turn into your own version of “Drunk History” as it crosses Civil War battlefields and other historic sites, including Monocacy National Battlefield and South Mountain Battlefield State Park.

Don’t leave before exploring the city’s Arts & Entertainment District, which has both indoor galleries and outdoor public art, like local favorite “The Community Bridge Mural” by William Cochran. You can also catch a play at the Maryland Ensemble Theater or the Weinberg Center for the Arts — a cinema dating back to 1928.

Virtual Learning 2020-2021!

These models include:

  • Increase in Live Face-to-Face Instruction
  • Record and Share Google Meet Sessions

  • Schoology Designated as the Course Management Platform
  • More Digital Resources, Activities and Assignments in Schoology
  • More Professional Learning for Teachers
  • Return to Normal Grading Practices
  • Weekly Instructional Planning

Here are some helpful tips that will get you ready for virtual learning this year!

KEEP A ROUTINE

First and foremost, keeping a routine is key for virtual learning. Since students are in their home environment, it can be difficult to feel focused. Have students prepare as if they are truly going to school — get up, put on an outfit, and eat breakfast. Then, they’ll be ready to learn virtually with their teachers! Although it isn’t the same as hopping on the school bus and stepping into the classroom, keeping a routine will keep them in the school mindset.

PICK A GOOD PLACE TO LEARN

Although most homes aren’t equipped to turn into classrooms, it’s important to make sure that the learning environment is geared to the success of your student! There are a few factors to consider when figuring out where they will be doing virtual school. If they’re in a place that is too isolated, they may not pay much attention since no one is watching them. Perhaps set up a place in the kitchen, but be conscious of their space throughout the day to limit distractions. Of course, you can ask them what space they prefer as well!

GATHER SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Although students will be doing schoolwork at home, they still need to be equipped with the right school supplies to succeed! Hopefully, teachers will provide students with a list of supplies they need. For notebooks, pencils, and more, look at places like Walmart, Dollar Tree, or Staples for low-cost supplies.

MAINTAIN SOCIAL INTERACTION (TO AN EXTENT)

A concern of many parents is how schooling from home will impact the mental health of children. Without the social interaction they receive from their classmates, it can take a toll on kids. If you’re comfortable, a great way to maintain social interaction is to have one or two friends who your child can “go to school with,” called a pod. This can allow for a simulated classroom setting if the students are in the same class. Group schooling is becoming a popular option for parents as it will allow kids to be around at least one other person for social purposes, while still following CDC guidelines.

HIRE A TUTOR

Another concern regarding schooling is that parents may have to go to work during the day and can’t help their children navigate online schooling. If parents are comfortable, hiring a person to guide your child throughout the school day is an option. Since teachers are guiding the class throughout the day, the “tutor” would ensure that students are on top of their work and logging online when they are supposed to for class. This could even just be in the form of a nanny, as it may just be helpful for students to have some guidance while parents are at work.

Although COVID-19 has completely transformed our lives, we are all in this together. Now, it’s important to provide our students with the tools that they need to succeed while doing school online. These tips for the upcoming school year will allow parents and students to feel prepared in tackling online schooling!

East of Market Apartments: “Love at First Sight”

A Letter About The East of Market Community and Our Charging Stations and Electric Vehicles

The East of Market team received the following letter from one of our residents.  The letter focuses on our community amenities, including those for electric vehicles:

Shane standing next to his electric vehicle by an East of Market charging station.

“My name is Shane; I live at the fabulous, East of Market Apartments with my angel of a husband Tyler, and our little chorkie Jaxwel. We are previous residents of the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York. East of Market has been home for us now since September of 2015. When we were searching for a place to call home, a local family member advised we check out East of Market. Love at first sight, as we toured the community it was very evident that EOM was not just going to be a home but an elevated level of living. From the stunning vistas, fit and finish to the LEED level of efficiency. We do not have children, but our little Jaxwel seems to have taken on the role. EOM welcomes our furry family members with open arms! The grounds are set up for you to tend to, tidy up after, and even a private wash station. Not to mention the ideal location if your commute involves any of the major highways going through Frederick. As my husband and myself both have offices in Rockville, with all things considered this was not a difficult decision to make.

When we first came to East of Market we had noticed something we hadn’t seen up to this point anywhere else, an electric vehicle level 2 charging station. We did not currently have an electric vehicle however, but became intrigued. After some time in the area, getting familiar with traffic and HOV lanes we started to take into consideration that this may not be such as scary thing to make the transition to an electric vehicle. With the level 2 accessible station outside at East of Market and level 2 capabilities in particular private garages, the decision was becoming even easier. With level 2 bringing the vehicle to a full charge would only take a few hours. The decision was becoming easier and easier. Now a few years later we are on our second electric car and the benefits are fantastic. Whether it is never having to stop at the gas pump, the maintenance, well there isn’t really any to speak of, just being able to use the HOV carpool lane easily will cut 20 minutes off my commute, and knowing that the trees might stay a little greener along my travels really allows it to come together nicely.

There is still some development needed for the infrastructure to support long range travel for electric vehicles but as fast charges become more popular along the highways and major shopping centers bringing your car to full charge in as little as 10 minutes, the option is becoming more and more approachable for people. Should you make the jump know that East of Market is there to help power you through it!

Sincerely,
Shane S., calling East of Market home since 2015″
